Boris Nazarov – author of the music to the film «An escape from death. Margarita Volodina»

On the 20th of November 2010 «Russia 1» TV channel presented to the public a documentary film «An escape from death. Margarita Volodina» made by Yuri Rashkin. An idea to shoot a movie about the unfairly forgotten star of Soviet theatre and cinema came to the director while he was working on a film dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Moscow Art Theatre School (by the way Rashkin himself is among the graduates of this noted School). Talking to his colleagues and classmates Rashkin found out that they know nothing about one of the School’s most outstanding graduates and made up his mind to find her by all means. It took the director five years to run down a poor Parisian flat of the famous actress that used to be the flower of Moscow well-known theatres and international festivals held in Cannes, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, and persuade her to be interviewed. As for the film itself, it was shot during the three summer months of 2010.
Yuri Rashkin offered Boris Nazarov to create music for the film. The composer had to cope with a rather difficult task: to combine music of search and analysis («An escape from death» is actually an investigation, a sort of documentary detective story) with sentimental dragging sounds that could help the audience to feel the tragedy of Volodin’s fate. Rashkin is sure that Boris did it brilliantly. «It’s very easy and pleasant for us to work together, - the director says. – I do not have to explain Boris anything, to give him long rationalizations. He possesses a unique creative intuition that helped him to understand the very essence of Margaritas character, to feel her inner gap and to reflect it in music».
Extracts of jams by Moscow Grooves Institute project recorded in June 2010 (keyboards – Pavel Khotin, bass guitar – Yuri Shulgin) have also been used in this cinematic offering to Margarita Volodina. Both musicians and the director hope that «An escape from death» will lay the foundation of long creative collaboration.
